Propidium Iodide; mono(3,8-diamino-5-(3-(diethyl(methyl)ammonio)propyl)-6-phenylphenanthridin-5-ium) monoiodide; CAS No.: 25535-16-4;Propidium Iodide. PROPERTIES: Propidium Iodide is a dark red crystalline powder with a molecular formula of C27H34IN3 and a molecular weight of 564.49 g/mol. It is freely soluble in water and alcohol, emitting bright fluorescence upon DNA binding. Proper storage requires keeping it at 2-8 C in a sealed container protected from light. When handling, avoid skin and eye contact due to its potential to cause phototoxic reactions and irritation. APPLICATIONS: Propidium Iodide is a popular nucleic acid stain in fluorescence spectroscopy. In cell cycle analysis, it intercalates with DNA, enabling quantification of cellular DNA content by flow cytometry (source: Cytometry Part A). The compound is also used for detecting dead cells in viability assays, as it only penetrates compromised cell membranes. Additionally, Propidium Iodide serves in molecular biology for visualizing DNA fragments during gel electrophoresis through its red fluorescence (source: Analytical Biochemistry).
